Honest Mistake
Honest Mistake is a theatrical Shanghai-mafia-themed speakeasy in the Saphan Khwai/Ari area, hidden inside the Aqua lifestyle mall on Phahonyothin Road and reachable on foot from BTS Saphan Khwai or BTS Ari. Getting in is part of the fun: you walk down a dimly lit alley into a fake Chinese pawnshop, hand a bribe (around 300 baht) to a lady in a qipao, and take the key up a narrow staircase to the third-floor bar. Inside, it channels 1930s-40s prohibition-era Shanghai with neon red Chinese signage, US-1920s speakeasy styling and an old-school mahjong table under dim lighting that evokes a secret casino. The cocktails blend Chinese and Western ingredients and come in three broad styles: complex, sweet-and-sour, and flavored gin and tonics. Signatures include the JuJube, a complex bourbon drink with sous-vide dried jujube, Chinese wolfberry and mushroom, and the ChinaTown, a creamy vodka-based mix of homemade chestnut syrup, egg white and fragrant lemon Chartreuse. Live music and guest DJs typically play on Fridays and Saturdays. It draws bar-hoppers looking for an immersive experience beyond a standard Bangkok cocktail bar. The dramatic entry ritual and detailed theming make it a memorable, photogenic night out.
