Cheap Charlie's
Cheap Charlie's is one of Bangkok's most legendary dive bars, an open-air, counter-onto-the-street institution that operated for over three decades on Sukhumvit Soi 11 before closing in 2015 to make way for redevelopment. It reopened in late 2017 in the On Nut area under The Beacon Place on Sukhumvit Soi 50, opposite the Lotus's parking lot and a five-minute walk from On Nut BTS station. The bar is famous for its dirt-cheap, simple-but-strong drinks with no fancy mixology, and its unmistakable quirky decor of fairy lights strung from animal skulls, model trains, Batman figures, and vintage road signs. Seating is casual outdoor bar stools on a paved area, giving it a relaxed, social, conversation-friendly vibe that has always been its trademark. It draws a loyal mix of expats, backpackers, budget travelers, and locals, and is welcoming to solo drinkers. The bar is cash-only and does not serve a full food menu, keeping the focus squarely on affordable beer, spirits, and cocktails. While some longtime patrons feel the On Nut reboot lost a little of the original Soi 11 magic, it remains a beloved fixture of Bangkok's expat nightlife. Local beers hover around 80 baht, keeping it true to its name.
